Grande Fête in Frankfurt as Winners of the 17th ABB LEAF Awards 2018 are Announced

The 17^th iteration of the ABB awards recognise the growing influence of some of the most impactful designs in our built environment with the Zaha Hadid Architects, ‘Port House’, Antwerp, Belgium crowned, as ‘Overall Winner 2018’. This year, the prestigious architectural ceremony received even greater exposure from to the global industry, through combining the ABB LEAF Awards with its partner event, LEAF Forum 2018 which took place on the 17^th and 18^th October.

The overall winner from Zaha Hadid Architects, Port House in Antwerp, repurposes, renovates and extends a derelict fire station into a new headquarters for the port, bringing together 500 staff that previously worked in separate buildings around the city. A sustainable and energy-efficient design was developed, reaching a ‘Very Good’ BREEAM environmental rating. With constant references to the Scheldt, the city of Antwerp and the dynamics of its port, married with the successful renovation and reuse of a redundant fire station – the new Port House will instantly serve the community well and in the future following its planned expansion.

Sir David Chipperfield was honoured with the Lifetime Achievement of the Year. The professor and curator established David Chipperfield Architects in 1985. He was professor of Architecture at the Staatliche Akademie der Bildenden Künste, Stuttgart from 1995 to 2001 and Norman R. Foster Visiting Professor of Architectural Design at Yale University in 2011. Sir David has taught and lectured worldwide at schools of architecture in Austria, Italy, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

This year’s judging panel included Roland Bechmann at Wermer Sobek; Kai-Uwe Bergmann at BIG; Andrew Bromberg at Aedas; Sir Peter Cook at Crab Studio; Peter Cerno at Cerno Architekten; Alan Crawford at Crawford Partnership; Werner Frosch at Henning Larsen; Ciara Gormley at PDP; Viviana Muscettola at Zaha Adid, Tateo Nakajima at Arup; Alireza Razavi at Studio Razavi; Paolo Rossi at Owings & Merrill LLP; Christina Seilern at Studio Seilern; Professor Bob Sheil at Bartlett School of Architecture; Cees Van der Spek at OVG and Thomas Willemeit at Graft.

The town of Graz, Austria received two honors with INNOCAD Architecture, ‘Schaudepot History Museum’, Graz, Austria winning the Interior Design Award – Completed and Future and Best Commercial Building Award with INNOCAD Architecture, ‘CUBEND C&P Corporate Office’, Graz, Austria.

On Thursday 18^th October, over 130 senior leaders from the world’s elite architectural design community gathered at The Frankfurt Marriot Hotel to celebrate the projects and personalities that have made the biggest impact upon our built environment, and the international design community, over the last 12 months and beyond. During a gala dinner the LEAF awards were handed out across 14 categories by BBC News Presenter and Reporter Mr Rick Kelsey. The Awards have been running for over 17 years and all shortlisted entries and winning projects are recognised as setting the benchmark for the future of the architectural design industry.

 

Further highlights of the evening included; highly commended Spacedge Designs, ‘Hotel Mono’, Singapore in the Best  Interior Design category;  Yu Momoeda Architecture Office ‘Four Funeral Houses’, Kasuga, Japan in the Hospitality Building category and ARCHSTUDIO, ‘Twisting Courtyard’, Beijing, China in the Best Refurbishment category.

 

This year, the LEAF Awards welcomed once again Headline Partner and Trophy Patron ABB.

Allowing a longstanding relationship with the event, this year witnessed pioneering technology leader ABB join as headline partner and trophy patron, a move that recognised both parties’ emphasis upon honouring the best and brightest in global architecture and design, and ABB’s commitment to positioning itself as a collaborative partner for the global architect community with the technology to bring many architectural visions to life.
