KANSAS CITY, Mo. – John Barton, PE, HNTB Corporation DOT market sector leader and senior vice president, has been appointed by Intelligent Transportation Society of America to co-chair its Smart Infrastructure Task Force.

ITS America established the Smart Infrastructure Task Force in February 2018 to address how technology and innovation can be incentivized. The task force — building upon extensive dialogue over the last several years with private sector innovators, as well as state, county and city leaders — creates a set of principles that embrace technological innovation.

“ITS America believes that the value of re-investing in our infrastructure is maximized by including new and emerging technologies,” said Barton. “I’m eager to work with Congress, the Administration and the task force to develop an infrastructure strategy that encourages innovation as transportation infrastructure is modernized.”

As co-chair, Barton will lead the committee in developing strategy for deploying new technology to move larger numbers of people and goods safely and securely through the country’s existing roads, bridges, ports and terminals.

“Technology requires special attention. Road infrastructure is static and long-lived, but transportation technology must adapt and change, and investment and partnership strategies must reflect that. We need unique solutions to address this in any new infrastructure effort. I’m excited to see our smart infrastructure task force taking on this challenge.” said Shailen Bhatt, President and CEO of ITS America.

In his role as HNTB’s DOT market sector leader, Barton, working in collaboration with regional/division presidents and office leaders, develops and directs strategies that enhance HNTB’s service to state departments of transportation across the country. He is based in Denver.
