EDISON, N.J. – A critical issue facing the American construction industry is the availability of skilled labor and the narrow pipeline of students opting into construction trades. That’s why the Carpenter Contractor Trust (CCT) is investing in local high school students.

In April, CCT underwrote four high school juniors and seniors to participate in the New York State SkillsUSA Leadership and Skills Championships. The four were among thousands of teenagers at the three-day event in Syracuse, all there to show off their talents in trades “from carpentry to computers.” According to SkillsUSA New York, the competition focuses on skills that can put students into the workforce quickly. CCT worked with Kim Komorowski, a representative of NRCC Local 279, to coordinate the students’ attendance at the competition.

The students sponsored by CCT were:

  • Julian Byberi
  • Antony J. Ferreira
  • Fatima C. Campos
  • Jonathan Garcia

“Young students that are just beginning to think about a career need exposure to a wide variety of choices,” said Christine D’Agostino, vice president of operations, CCT. “We were thrilled to support these students because we understand the growing shortage of skilled workers in the construction industry and felt this experience would be a worthwhile introduction to a carpentry career.”
