Sean Kilcarr, a former editor-in-chief of trucking industry magazine Fleet Owner, joined the association this week as senior editor, reporting to AASHTO Communications Director Lloyd Brown and responsible for producing the weekly AASHTO Journal online newsmagazine.

He replaces longtime journalist John Boyd, who is retiring after helming the AASHTO Journal for nearly four years.

“While AASHTO will miss John’s leadership, guidance and news sense, we are thrilled that someone with Sean’s experience and knowledge will help carry on the more than 30-year AASHTO Journal legacy,” said AASHTO Executive Director Bud Wright.

Kilcarr, a lifetime Northern Virginia native, is a veteran trade journalist who has covered a variety of industries during his 25-year career.

He began writing about utility truck fleets in 1993, followed by stints covering the oil and natural gas markets as well as the air cargo industry, before moving on to focus on trucking, logistics and related supply chain trends.

Kilcarr joined Fleet Owner in 2000, where he developed the popular “Trucks at Work” blog, winning both a Jesse B. Neal Award and an Editorial Excellence Award from the American Society of Business Publication Editors for that online publication.

He also shared a Jesse B. Neal Award for a magazine feature story focused on cargo theft, and has been a Neal Award finalist several times for other online and print articles.

He’s a 1989 graduate of Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Va., with a Bachelor of Arts degree in history.
