Bowie, MD – The International Masonry Institute is pleased to announce the creation of the Joan B. Calambokidis Innovation in Masonry Design Competition, which challenges architects and engineers to imagine the future of masonry design and construction. Thirty-thousand dollars in prizes will be awarded to winners across three categories: students; young architects and engineers (under 40); as well as firms, multidisciplinary teams, and individual architects and engineers.

The competition is named for former IMI President Joan B. Calambokidis, who retired in April 2017 after more than twenty years leading IMI. During her tenure, Calambokidis strived to foster collaboration between craftworkers, contractors, and designers to improve building design and construction. The competition honors Calambokidis’ legacy of innovation and her commitment to the future of masonry design.

To build sustainable, resilient, and energy efficient structures now and into the future, architects and engineers will be required to develop – and craftworkers will have to train for and implement – innovative approaches that improve the design, delivery, construction, maintenance, and operation of building systems.

Registration for the inaugural Competition opens online at www.imiweb.org/jbcaward on September 8, 2017. Submissions will be accepted November 15-November 30, 2017. Jurors include James Boland, BAC President and IMI Co-Chair and Michael Schmerbeck, Back Brook Masonry President and IMI Co-Chair, along with a panel of architects and engineers, including: Stephen T. Ayers, FAIA, CCM, LEED AP, Architect of the Capitol; Stephen V. DeSimone, PE, LEED AP, President and Chief Executive of DeSimone Consulting Engineers; Julie Eizenberg, FAIA, Founding Principal of Koning Eizenberg Architecture; Alan Feltoon, AIA, AICP, Senior Director, Michael Graves Architecture & Design; and Carlos Jiménez, Principal and Lead Designer, Carlos Jiménez Studi. Winners will be announced in February and honored in March 2018.
