The association said that President John Schroer appointed Adetokunbo “Toks” Omishakin of the Tennessee Department of Transportation to a two-year term as vice chair of the newly formed AASHTO Council on Active Transportation.

Omishakin is deputy commissioner and chief of environment and planning at TDOT, where Schroer is the commissioner.

Omishakin has also participated in other association activities, which include chairing a task force on multimodal transportation planning and policy, and serving on the working group that oversees the Center for Environmental Excellence by AASHTO.

AASHTO board created the Active Transportation Council as part of its broad overhaul of the committee structure over the past year, and it first convened Sept. 26 at the association’s annual meeting in Phoenix. It is chaired by Leslie Richards, secretary of the Pennsylvania DOT.

She said the council plans to address issues related to bicycle, pedestrian, and other active transportation modes, including non-motorized access to the multimodal network.
