DENVER – Katharine “Katie” Nees, PE, has been named practice leader for HNTB Corporation’s Denver office. An HNTB growth officer and senior vice president, Nees is a nationally recognized leader with more than 35 years of transportation experience. She is skilled at alternative financing and delivery options such as public-private partnerships and design-build-operate-maintain.

HNTB recently moved into office space in downtown Denver at 1700 Lincoln Street.

“HNTB recognizes Colorado’s demand for transportation infrastructure that improves mobility and creates a dynamic transportation network,” said Keith Hinkebein, PE, HNTB Central Division president. “We are pleased to have Katie in this role to oversee our work and operations in the region.”

Prior to joining HNTB in 2016, Nees served as director of the Strategic Projects Division of the Texas Department of Transportation. Her responsibilities included direct management of six sections within the division and delivery of $28 billion in complex, high-profile capital projects.

Nees is a past board member of the International Bridge, Tunnel and Turnpike Association. Additionally, she is a past recipient of the Ethel S. Birchland Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Road and Transportation Builders Association for outstanding leadership and long-time commitment to transportation.

Nees earned a Master of Business Administration from the University of Texas at Dallas, and a Bachelor of Science in civil engineering from Purdue University. She is a 2015 graduate of the AASHTO National Transportation Leadership Institute.

HNTB has been, or currently is involved in, multiple significant infrastructure projects in Colorado, including program and construction management services for the Denver International Airport Hotel and Transit Center; positive train control recommendations for the Denver Regional Transportation District; design services for the Denver Broncos Sports Authority Field at Mile High; and program management for VelociRFTA Bus Rapid Transit in Aspen, the nation’s first rural BRT system.
