HNTB’s Tony Shkurti Named President of Structural Engineers Association of Illinois
CHICAGO –Tony Shkurti, Ph.D., PE, HNTB Fellow and Great Lakes Division bridge practice leader, has been named president of the Structural Engineers Association of Illinois. He began a one-year term on July 1, 2017.
As president, Dr. Shkurti helps lead the organization’s mission to advance and advocate excellence in structural engineering and aid in safeguarding the public. SEAOI accomplishes this through education, outreach and networking to structural engineering professionals living and working in the state.
“I am honored to have the opportunity to lead this group of outstanding professionals who have set a standard of excellence in the structural engineering industry,” said Dr. Shkurti. “Through continued leadership and engagement, we will continue to advance the mission and values of our organization and ensure its prominent position in helping to build and maintain high-quality infrastructure in communities across Illinois.”
Dr. Shkurti most recently served as president-elect and has been an active leader in SEAOI for the past six years, including stints as board director, secretary and treasurer.
He is a nationally recognized authority in structural engineering who provides senior-level technical expertise on projects with unique and complex problems. Dr. Shkurti has played an integral role in high-profile projects across the country, including serving as technical lead of construction engineering for the 2,230-foot Jeremiah Morrow Bridge in Warren County, Ohio; structural lead engineer for the design of all twin tub girders on the Marquette Interchange in downtown Milwaukee; and senior project engineer in charge of modeling for the I-70 Mississippi River Bridge in St. Louis. He also is credited with designing an innovative way to prove system redundancy for twin steel tub girder bridges that saves time and money for structural engineers, which has become a national standard in the industry.
Dr. Shkurti earned a Ph.D. in civil engineering from the University of Illinois, a Master of Science in civil engineering from Wayne State University and a Bachelor of Science in civil engineering from the University of Tirana, Albania. In addition to SEAOI, he is involved in the American Society of Civil Engineers, American Institute of Steel Construction and Precast/Pre-stressed Concrete Institute.
