Transportation Expert Richard Schmalz Joins HNTB

NEW YORK – Richard Schmalz, PE, joined HNTB Corporation as civil/transportation growth champion and associate vice president in the firm’s New York office, located in the Empire State Building.

 

Schmalz leads New York office growth efforts targeting complex, large-scale highway, bridge and rail infrastructure programs as well as design-build projects.

 

“Richard is a recognized leader with extensive multimodal transportation engineering expertise,” said Thomas J. Spearing III, HNTB’s New York office leader and senior vice president. “His experience and insights in program management and design-build projects is of great value to transportation agencies working to improve safety and enhance mobility in the region.”

 

Schmalz has more than 40 years of experience managing programs for the planning, design and construction of highways, streets, bridges and rail facilities in New York City and Long Island. His expertise includes management of multi-disciplined design teams, construction inspection services and design-build project delivery. He has successfully managed numerous highway, bridge and rail projects with the New York State Department of Transportation, the New York City Department of Transportation, the New York City Economic Development Corporation and the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, among others.

A professional engineer in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and Florida, Schmalz is a graduate of the State University of New York at Stony Brook with a Master of Science in environmental engineering. He also holds a Bachelor of Engineering in civil engineering from The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art. Schmalz currently serves as president of the New York metro section of the American Society of Highway Engineers. He also is a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, the Institute of Traffic Engineers and the Long Island Contractors Association.
