Woolpert to Renovate Elizabeth City State University Buildings

ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. — Elizabeth City State University (ECSU) has contracted with Woolpert to provide comprehensive design services for the G.R. Little Library and Moore Hall on the rural campus in northeast North Carolina. The project is valued at $13 million.

Woolpert—a national architecture, engineering and geospatial (AEG) firm—will renovate and modernize the library and the hall, the latter of which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Woolpert Architect Robert Griffin said plans for G.R. Little Library will reflect the 21st-century design philosophy for libraries, which includes the creation of flexible study spaces with quick access to multimedia resources, the forming of a central knowledge and learning community/campus hub, and an overall environment of connected learning that addresses the needs of college students in 2017 and beyond.

Moore Hall, one of the first buildings built on campus, will be converted from its traditional classroom setting and auditorium into a general purpose instructional academic building. Renovations will provide for distance learning and ready access to technology, and include multipurpose lecture rooms and study rooms.

“We’re excited about the opportunity to blend our extensive experience working with higher education facilities across the country and make these ECSU buildings among the most technologically advanced learning centers,” Griffin said. “We try to help universities best use the funds they have available to them so their projects are at the forefront of industry knowledge and stand the test of time. That’s imperative in a university setting, and that’s what our team brings.”

The renovations will be partially funded by the $2 billion Connect NC bond issue passed in March. The bond is designed to connect the state to 21st-century technologies through statewide investments in education, parks, safety, recreation, and water and sewer infrastructure.

Woolpert will orchestrate these ECSU projects simultaneously in a construction management style. Planning is underway, and construction is slated to begin later this year.
