The American Council of Engineering Companies of New York (ACEC New York) honored three Gannett Fleming projects in the 2017 Engineering Excellence Awards. The awards were presented at a black-tie gala on April 1 in New York City.

The Newtown Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant in Brooklyn, N.Y., received a Diamond Award in the waste and stormwater category. The Diamond Award is the top award presented by ACEC New York. Gannett Fleming, CB&I, and Michael Baker formed a joint venture team for construction management of a six-year upgrade that increased the plant’s wet weather processing capacity from 310 to 720 million gallons per day.

The Long Island Railroad (LIRR) Design-Build Johnson Avenue Yard project was recognized with a Platinum Award in the transportation category. Gannett Fleming provided resident engineering services to LIRR for construction management of the Johnson Avenue Yard reconfiguration on the south side of busy Jamaica Station in Queens, N.Y. The improvements laid the groundwork for construction of a new station passenger platform. Stantec Consulting Services is the engineer of record for the project.

The Advanced Wastewater Filtration System in Upton, N.Y., earned a Gold Award in the waste and stormwater category. The P.W. Grosser/Gannett Fleming team assisted the Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) in remaining compliant with a state pollutant discharge permit. The innovative solution treats effluent from BNL’s sewage treatment plant, reroutes it away from the Peconic River, and safely delivers it to groundwater recharge basins.

Each year, more than 60 member firms submit projects to the ACEC New York Engineering Excellence Awards. They are judged by a panel of industry experts on a rigorous set of criteria, which includes complexity, innovation, and value to society.
