Cortec’s New EcoAir Mold Release Helps Protect Injection Molds, Castings, and the Environment

Easy release is an important factor in the molding of rubber, plastic, or metal castings. Castings that do not easily come out of their molds risk defect and slow down the entire molding process.

Corrosion protection is another important consideration for the molding industry. Metal injection molds are extremely expensive and must be stored under specially regulated temperature and humidity conditions. Protecting these molds from corrosion can therefore serve an important role in securing the longest possible lifespan of these costly parts, especially those used in corrosive molding conditions.

Cortec’s new EcoAir® Mold Release provides dual protection for these needs by combining lubrication with a biobased corrosion inhibitor for injection molds and other metal surfaces. When sprayed on the mold, EcoAir® Mold Release leaves a clear thin non-staining silicone coating that makes it easier to release rubber, plastic, or metal castings from their molds. The biobased corrosion inhibitor component forms a molecular passivating layer to guard the mold surface against aggressive species, protecting it from corrosion during operation and storage.

EcoAir® Mold Release is versatile and can be used for a variety of purposes:

  • Easier release of castings
  • Corrosion protection of metal molds
  • Lubrication and corrosion protection of tools, pulleys, guides, motor bearings, and battery terminals
  • Easier disassembly of “frozen” metal parts

Cortec® has made application and disposal more environmentally friendly by packaging EcoAir® Mold Release in recyclable EcoAir® spray cans. These cans dispense the product through the power of compressed air without the use of CFC or HCFC propellants that could affect the ozone layer. Bag-on-valve technology allows EcoAir® Mold Release to be sprayed in any direction, even upside down. The aluminum can may be recycled when emptied. *

EcoAir® Mold Release dries quickly and offers excellent water repellency. It restores dielectric properties and is stable up to 392°F (200°C). EcoAir® Mold Release is safe to use on painted surfaces, rubber, and plastics. It has been tested according to ASTM D 1735 “Standard Practice for Testing Water Resistance of Coatings Using Water Fog Apparatus.”
