Atkins joined airport staff, elected officials and other stakeholders at Nashville International Airport (BNA) to break ground recently on a terminal area parking garage. Designed by Atkins, the garage is the first project initiated under the Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority’s (MNAA) comprehensive renovation and expansion plan, BNA Vision.

“Breaking ground heralds the first phase of construction of the BNA Vision, our dynamic plan to meet the needs of our rapidly growing region,” said Rob Wigington, MNAA president and CEO. “This state-of-the-art parking and transportation center is step one in maintaining Nashville International Airport as a world-class facility for our passengers.”

BNA Vision addresses the airport’s record-setting passenger growth and increasing international demand for access. The $1.2 billion renovation and expansion plan, including the parking garage, will touch virtually every corner of the airport’s terminal area as part of MNAA’s effort to better accommodate an expected 20 million passengers by the year 2035.

“The new parking garage will play a vital role in supporting the airport’s continued growth while providing an important source of revenue,” said Todd Knuckey, Atkins vice president and aviation sector lead. “We are delivering BNA forward-thinking design services that will enhance access to terminal areas for the airport’s future customers.”

The six-level parking structure will feature approximately 2,000 new parking spaces, a new ground transportation center, electric vehicle charging stations and a new parking management facility. Sustainability features include a rooftop canopy to capture up to 20,000 gallons of rainwater for irrigation purposes, a partial “green wall” with planter boxes and rooftop solar panels to help power parking and airport operations. The garage is expected to be open by the end of 2018.

Additional renovations under BNA Vision include a new international arrivals building, new ticketing counters and additional baggage claims, expanded concourses and a revamped central entrance hall. The renovations will be phased in over the next five to seven years.
