Johnson and Plumpton Named Senior Vice Presidents at Gannett Fleming

Harrisburg, Pa.: Gannett Fleming has elected Mark D. Johnson and William M. Plumpton, CEP, as senior vice presidents of the firm.

Johnson, based in North Andover, Massachusetts, serves as the national practice director of environmental compliance and remediation services. He is responsible for the implementation and supervision of a wide range of environmental services for Fortune 100 companies.

Johnson was the creator of the firm’s Corporate Sustainability Program, serving as the Corporate Sustainability Officer from 2009 to 2016. He also was elected to the Global Environmental Management Initiative’s (GEMI) board of directors as Communications and Marketing Chair, where he developed a water sustainability planner, which became the organization’s most successful tool.

Johnson has used his expertise to support clients across the United States with soil and groundwater assessments, air permit applications, site investigation and remediation, and wastewater treatment and engineering projects. He is experienced in all aspects of environmental compliance and remediation services, including site audits, feasibility studies, risk assessments, remedial designs and system operations, and site closures.

Johnson’s career highlights include serving as the project principal responsible for the regulatory agency negotiations and implementation of remedial action for the closure of a 48-acre former food processing plant. In addition, he managed the environmental investigations and permitting associated with a $35 million expansion of a meat processor.

With more than 30 years of industry experience, Johnson also contributes to his profession as a member of the National Association of Environmental Managers Affiliates Council and the Food Industry Environmental Council. He is a past Chairman of the Food and Beverage Environmental Conference and the International Dairy Foods Association.

Johnson earned a bachelor of science in geology from Northeastern University.

Plumpton is based in Gannett Fleming’s Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, office. He serves as a senior project manager and environmental scientist. A recognized leader in the preparation of environmental assessments, environmental impact statements, and National Environmental Policy Act requirements, Plumpton also serves as the national practice director for environmental management and natural resources, driving innovation, providing technical guidance, and ensuring consistency of practice and quality across the firm.

Plumpton’s expertise has assisted clients across the United States and Canada in natural and social environmental analyses, cultural resource studies, wetlands and permitting, and hazardous waste studies for transportation facilities, utilities, and land development projects. He also brings extensive knowledge of multi-national comprehensive agency coordination and public involvement to his scope of services.

In his 27-year tenure with Gannett Fleming, Plumpton has worked on multiple border crossing projects between the United States and Canada. Additional career highlights include serving as the project principal responsible for the preparation and quality review of more than 600 environmental reviews for the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection as part of the Superstorm Sandy recovery support. In addition, he has led the environmental efforts associated with regional and inter-city rail expansion projects for multiple transit agencies along the east coast.

A graduate of The Pennsylvania State University, Plumpton holds a bachelor of science in environmental resource management. He is a member of the Certification Review Board for the Academy of Board Certified Environmental Professionals, and he holds the internationally recognized certified environmental professional credential.

Plumpton also dedicates his time to the National Association of Environmental Professionals (NAEP), where he currently serves as the chair of the Chapters Committee. He served on the NAEP board of directors for nine years.
