HDR Awarded for ‘Masterful’ Planning at Anchorage International Airport

The Northwest Chapter of the American Association of Airport Executives selected HDR to receive the Corporate Award of Excellence for 2016. The award was presented to HDR during NWAAAE’s annual conference held recently in Big Sky, Montana.

HDR was nominated for the award by Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport, which recently completed a master-plan update. As grounds for the nomination, NWAAAE cited HDR’s comprehensive public outreach program that allowed for greater stakeholder input throughout the master-plan process. HDR served as a local support base to RS&H during the project, leading public communications and engagement — keys to creating a successful master plan. The project had previously stalled due to public dissatisfaction.

The approach taken by HDR led to greater involvement to arrive at a master plan widely supported by stakeholders. Because an airport master plan provides direction for growth and long-term development, it greatly impacts the surrounding community. In the case of Anchorage International, the impact extends further because the airport is the second largest hub for cargo in the country, fifth largest in the world and a primary source of economic activity in the state of Alaska.

HDR’s successful public involvement program strengthened the partnership between the airport and surrounding communities, helping the airport make more informed, long-term decisions.

“HDR did a masterful job,” said Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport Director John Parrot. “HDR was committed to engaging the public, using innovative techniques such as online open houses and community listening posts. This process allowed more people to participate. All of these efforts set the stage for a successful outcome.”
