Bob Kleinmann, a nationally recognized expert in inorganic groundwater impacts, has joined HDR. As the firm’s environmental geology technical lead, he will help clients navigate changes in the new coal combustion residuals ruling and develop strategies for other water contamination concerns. Kleinmann is based in HDR’s Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania office.

Prior to joining HDR, Kleinmann was a senior mining technologist for CH2M. Before that, he worked for the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Energy Technology Laboratory and the U.S. Bureau of Mines.

Kleinmann is particularly well known for his groundbreaking research and innovative contributions in controlling acid mine drainage, introducing alternatives to costly conventional options for remediating impacted groundwater. Technologies he has uncovered have the potential to result in significant savings over the lifespan of remedial action, and to better insulate communities from the risks associated with coal combustion residuals removal, transport and disposal.

“Bob’s expertise in inorganic contaminant migration and remediation significantly enhances HDR’s ability to identify cost-effective solutions for our clients in a variety of circumstances, including ash landfill and pond closure projects and acid mine drainage projects,” said Bill Ahlert, HDR vice president.

An industry pioneer, Kleinmann has authored or co-authored more than 90 publications on mining and environmental technology, and serves as Editor-in-Chief of the quarterly peer-reviewed journal Mine Water and the Environment. He is vice president of the International Mine Water Association and past president of the American Society of Mining and Reclamation. He holds a doctorate in geology from Princeton University.
