Atkins, one of the world’s leading design, engineering and project management consultancies, has appointed John Chappell as rail asset management director to its Transportation division.

In his new role, John will support engagement with the rail market, setting out and driving forward the rail asset management strategy. John will build on Atkins’ significant experience of asset management leadership across numerous sectors, including rail, highways and water, drawing on skills from across the business to meet the needs of clients.

Previously, as founder and managing director of a niche rail asset management consultancy, John has provided advisory services to Network Rail, Train Operating Companies (TOCs) and other key industry stakeholders.  This has ranged from developing cross-disciplinary asset management strategy and organisational change, to business improvement and efficiency programmes.

As Head of Asset Management (Buildings) at Network Rail, he was involved in the leadership, development and delivery of the asset management practice nationally. John led Network Rail’s engagement with the Office for Rail Regulation (ORR) for both Control Period 4 and 5, and has also led other significant asset and infrastructure sections within Network Rail.

On joining Atkins, John said: “I am delighted to have joined a great team at Atkins and to be asked to drive forward rail asset management advisory services in the business. Rail infrastructure owners, operators, funders and regulators face many new challenges, which will only be met through the development and practice of excellence in asset management.

I am excited about the opportunity for Atkins to build on its strong strategic asset management experience and leadership, deep rail knowledge and skills, and cross-sector experience, to deliver great outcomes for clients.”
