SCTE/ISBE Joins Villanova RISE Forum to Accelerate Energy 2020 Efforts
VILLANOVA, PA and EXTON, PA, May 3, 2015—The Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers (SCTE) and its global arm, the International Society of Broadband Experts (ISBE), have expanded the resource base for the cable industry’s ambitious energy management activities by becoming the newest member of Villanova University’s RISE Forum. RISE—Resilient Innovation through Sustainable Engineering—is dedicated to advancing the sustainable enterprise through the discipline of engineering and is the industry consortium of the College of Engineering’s graduate program in Sustainable Engineering.
The RISE mission aligns with the goals of SCTE/ISBE’s Energy 2020 Program, which helps cable telecommunications operators manage power, density and performance growth in ways that are beneficial for their businesses, their customers and the environment. Through RISE, SCTE/ISBE and members of the Energy 2020 program will work side-by-side with faculty and graduate students from Villanova’s graduate program in Sustainable Engineering. Energy 2020 is intended to achieve cost avoidance of $1 billion in energy expenditures by the end of the decade, to ensure maximum customer uptime and to enable capacity growth via successful organizational, customer and environmental energy solutions.
A membership-based network for executives, engineers and technical leaders, the RISE Forum works to accelerate the identification and application of data-driven solutions that will help its members increase the sustainability of their respective organizations and secure a competitive advantage in the marketplace. Karl Schmidt, faculty fellow in Villanova’s Sustainable Engineering program and director of the RISE Forum, explains, “The underlying goal is to use sustainable engineering principles to drive resilient innovation across the value chain, and in the process reduce costs, manage risk, fuel growth and enhance reputation.”
A partnership with SCTE/ISBE presents unique opportunities for both SCTE/ISBE and RISE.
“Energy 2020 is an enormous effort that requires changes in technology and institutional thinking across the entire cable telecommunications industry,” said Chris Bastian, senior vice president and CTO of SCTE/ISBE. “The RISE program’s head start in sustainable engineering and the collective knowledge of the RISE Forum membership will provide us with an entirely new set of resources that can help us drive energy planning and achieve our goals on schedule.”
“As the leading applied-science organization in the cable telecommunications industry, SCTE/ISBE is driving thought leadership for some of the largest communications and entertainment companies in the world,” said Keith Argue, Villanova College of Engineering Assistant Dean of External Relations. “Our partnership with SCTE/ISBE provides both the College and the University relationship-building opportunities with an entire sector of the economy that we were not exposed to previously.”
Argue added, “We are equally excited to leverage the connections between SCTE/ISBE, RISE and our National Science Foundation-supported Industry-University Collaborative Research Center, the Center for Energy Smart Electronic Systems (ES2). Like RISE, ES2 faculty work directly with their counterparts in industry to solve real-world problems; in this case, improving energy efficiency and performance of data centers. Comcast is a member of both RISE and SCTE/ISBE, and there are exciting opportunities on the horizon to leverage collective expertise in energy efficiency and corporate sustainability.”
A team of graduate students from Villanova is making a formal presentation today at an SCTE/ISBE Energy 2020 Plenary Session at Time Warner Cable in Herndon, VA. The team is describing the first phase of their benchmarking analysis, designed to assess how the cable industry, as a whole, compares with other industries with respect to sustainability reporting and actions. The goal is to help SCTE/ISBE and its members develop sustainability-related metrics and training materials, as well as to help cable to implement a strategy for making demonstrable reductions in energy consumption.
