HNTB Whitepaper Breaks Down FAST Act’s Section 6020

KANSAS CITY, Mo., April 5, 2016 – HNTB Corporation issued a new white paper highlighting the Fixing America’s Surface Transportation Act – Section 6020, which allocates $95 million in federal matching funds to state DOTs that successfully apply to pilot alternative transportation revenue mechanisms or technologies.
Ananth Prasad, PE, HNTB transportation practice leader, and Matt Click, AICP, HNTB director priced managed lanes, co-authored the paper and said Section 6020 is a “breakthrough” legislation, because it recognizes the insolvency of the federal gas tax, can change Americans’ transportation habits and puts more power into the hands of state DOTs.
DOTs must meet a list of criteria to comply with the U.S. Department of Transportation standards for the initiative in order to receive Section 6020 grant funding.
The paper outlines six steps DOTs can take now to prepare for a pilot program, including meeting the May 20, 2016, deadline for the grant application.
HNTB’s expertise on infrastructure funding spans several disciplines, including tolling, priced managed lanes and the relationship between intelligent transportation systems and future of mileage-based user fees. Additionally, please click here to read a Viewpoint on the FAST Act by Prasad.
