Caltrans Increasingly Relies on Mobile Mapping Rather than Traditional Surveying

Caltrans’ high-tech Mobile Terrestrial Laser Scanning vehicle is revolutionizing traditional survey, design and engineering practices.
Featuring seven cameras, two spinning lasers and amber rotator lights, it combines the use of a laser scanner and global positioning satellite navigation to collect three-dimensional survey information along highways while increasing worker safety and minimizing the impact on motorists. This pioneering system can accomplish in only one day the amount of work it would take for a three- to four-person survey crew to do in two to three months.
