MADISON, Wisc., Feb. 8, 2016—Berntsen International, Inc., is proud to announce that it has been granted a patent (US 9,235,823 B2) for the design of an underground asset management system that couples RFID technology, mobile software, and cloud-based information storage. The patent grants legal protection to a number of advancements that are present in the Berntsen’s InfraMarker System. It is another in a series of Berntsen innovations to improve the management of underground infrastructure.

A key component of the system is the ability to link data saved on the underground RFID tag with a larger virtual database of information such as photos, maintenance logs, location coordinates, and owner contact data. With a standard mobile phone and the InfraMarker mobile app, a field locator can retrieve all the information needed to find and identify a buried valve, weld, fiber splice, or utility conflict.

The innovations recognized in this patent can reduce the number of damaging and dangerous line hits, save time and money of locating underground utilities, and enhance safety maintenance and compliance requirements.
