Mabey Hire has won an Innovation Award from the Institution of Civil Engineers Wales in recognition of its work on the Erwood Bridge Refurbishment Scheme. The award, in association with Dawnus Construction, commends its innovative solution for enabling removal and reconstruction of the existing concrete piers at the Erwood site on the River Wye.

The Innovation Award was presented to Mabey Hire and Dawnus Construction at a ceremony held at the Mariott Hotel Cardiff on Friday 1st May, and recognised their development of a complex temporary works solution to safely replace the concrete piers at Erwood Bridge.

Erwood Bridge spans the River Wye at Builth Wells and is located in a particularly sensitive environmental area, meaning careful consideration had to be given to developing a sustainable and economically viable solution.

The initial solution proposed by Dawnus Construction was to remove the existing reinforced concrete crosshead and piers by saw cutting them into sections. Mabey Hire developed and provided a temporary works solution that not only supported the entire structure (a 4 span reinforced concrete and steel beam deck) off the three intermediate waters, but also a working platform that enabled large sections of concrete to be cut, moved on a skate system and lifted onto the existing deck for removal.

Steve Farmer, CEO at Mabey Hire praised the hard work and commitment of the Mabey employees for their involvement in and dedication to a very successful scheme.

“I am delighted that the work of Mabey Hire and Dawnus Construction has been recognised by ICE Wales. The Erwood Bridge Refurbishment Scheme was a complex and ambitious project, and I am grateful to both teams for their innovative approach and joint effort in bringing it to fruition. We are very proud of our achievement and thrilled to have been commended for it by the ICE board”.

The ICE Wales seeks to promote the achievements of civil engineers in the region, and supports over 3,500 civil engineers working and living in Wales. It arranges awards and competitions, provides support and training and aims to influence public infrastructure policy to the benefit of the civil engineering world.
