Taiwan Deploys a Wastewater Monitoring System Tied to the Internet

The Environmental Protection Administration (EPA) of Taiwan has begun construction on a wastewater monitoring system that will monitor the flow coming from industrial parks, companies and powerplants. The system is in response to widespread violations from industry, including the discharge of large volumes of polluted and dangerous wastewater.

The Internet-based system will provide live real-time feeds on wastewater levels and discharges at certain site. The first phase of the system will monitor quantities above 10,000 cubic meters coming from industrial parks. The second phase will monitor discharges of at least 15,000 cubic meters coming from commercial firms and power plants. All together, the system will have oversight of nearly 60 percent of wastewater activity in Taiwan. Sensors will capture quantity, temperature, pH level, electrical conductivity, chemical oxygen demand and suspended solids of the wastewater.
