Hawaii DOT Provides Kilauea Volcano Eruption Update

Even though the eruptions that began way back on May 3 from the Kilauea Volcano – which is located on the southern shore of the “big island” of Hawaii – continue unabated, the Hawaii Department of Transportation is already hard at work formulating a recovery strategy for re-opening roads blocked by hardened lava flows.

In the interview below, Ed Sniffen, Hawaii DOT’s deputy director, explains how the agency plans to survey roads for “hot spots” with drones, as well as how the agency will prioritize which roadways will be rehabilitated first; a determination largely based on what areas in and around the eruption zone remain viable for human use.
