New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced that he has appointed infrastructure consultant and former Chicago public works commissioner Paul Karas to be commissioner of the state Department of Transportation

In the same personnel announcement, Cuomo also said he appointed Cathy Calhoun, who had been acting NYSDOT commissioner since August, to serve as director of state operations.

The governor said that Karas most recently worked for four years as vice president and manager of RS&H Inc., a transportation and buildings infrastructure consulting firm, where he was in its aviation practice. Before that, the announcement said, he was president and founder of Karas Associates, an infrastructure development consultancy.

“Karas has extensive experience working at the Port Authority of New York/New Jersey,” the governor’s announcement said, “where he served as director of the $3.2 billion John F. Kennedy International Airport Redevelopment Program, and he previously served as the commissioner of public works for the city of Chicago for three years.”

It also said that in 1997, the U.S. House of Representatives appointed Karas to an advisory panel to help develop solutions to funding and operating concerns about Amtrak.
