The first meeting of AASHTO’s newly formed Active Transportation Council took place during the association’s annual meeting in Phoenix on Sept. 26.

“This is a new group, but the issues it plans to address are familiar to everyone and important to our communities both rural and urban,” said Leslie Richards, council chair and secretary of the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation. Richards said the council plans to address issues related to bicycle, pedestrian, and other active transportation modes, including non-motorized access to the multimodal network. It also will provide input on related policy issues and issues that cut across various transportation modes to the AASHTO Transportation Policy Forum.
