Michael Baker International, a global leader in engineering, planning and consulting services, was recently ranked by the Pittsburgh Business Times as the number-one engineering firm in the greater Pittsburgh area, based on 2016 billings. The company has traditionally occupied the top spot on the list, which is announced annually in the publication’s Book of Lists.

“Michael Baker continues to see significant growth and achievement in engineering both in Pittsburgh and across the country,” said H. Daniel Cessna, Senior Vice President and Pennsylvania Headquarters Regional Director at Michael Baker International. “Our talented team of engineers, architects and specialized professionals in the Pittsburgh market collaborate with team members nationwide to provide our clients with the best and most innovative solutions for their planning, design and construction challenges. This recognition is a testament to how ‘We Make a Difference’ through continued development in the Pittsburgh area and all the communities we serve.”

The company, which employs more than 3,000 nationwide and 709 in Pittsburgh, saw a year-over-year increase in revenue, rising 8.53 percent to $1.4 billion. Recent Pittsburgh-based projects that contributed to this increase include:

  • Lower Hill Redevelopment Project: Michael Baker provided preliminary engineering, along with final design and construction-phase services for a multi-phase project to revitalize the 28-acre site of Pittsburgh’s former Civic (Mellon) Arena. The project includes improved vehicle, bicycle and pedestrian transit, as well as an opportunity for economic growth in the community. The infrastructure also provides a historic first step to reconnect the Hill District to downtown Pittsburgh, which have been separated since the 1950s.
  • Greenfield Bridge: The Greenfield Bridge gained national attention as one of the 70,000 structurally deficient bridges in the United States and was demolished and removed in 2015. Michael Baker currently serves as the primary construction management and inspection services firm for the $17.5-million project to replace the former bridge. The new span, expected to be completed in 2017, will include three lanes of travel for motorists, a bike lane and a sidewalk for pedestrians.
  • Pittsburgh Public Housing Redevelopment: Michael Baker is currently providing land development services for the Housing Authority of the City of Pittsburgh (HACP) and local entities to redevelop multiple public housing sites throughout the city. The sites have been converted from outdated institutional housing into thriving mixed income communities. For the past 10 years, Michael Baker has assisted with master planning, site development design, utility infrastructure, low impact development techniques and permanent stormwater Best Management Practices (BMP) at all of the new development sites.
  • 7th Street Bridge: Michael Baker was selected to provide preliminary engineering, final design and construction-phase services for the rehabilitation of Pittsburgh’s Three Sisters Bridges, which are owned and maintained by Allegheny County. The first of the bridges to be repaired is the 7th Street Bridge, also known as the Andy Warhol Bridge. As part of the structural analysis of this bridge, the Michael Baker team developed a series of three-dimensional, finite-element models to establish the existing forces on the bridge, determine the new dead loads based on the proposed rehabilitation, calculate the modern-design live loads, and evaluate proposed construction sequencing.

Michael Baker also was ranked by the Pittsburgh Business Times as the region’s number-two environmental firm and is ranked seventh on the architectural companies list. The company holds the sixth spot on the Private Companies list and was ranked sixth in the Environmental/Engineering/Energy category of the Fastest Growing Companies in the area.
