DETROIT – HNTB Corporation is proud to celebrate its 25th anniversary of shaping infrastructure in Michigan.

HNTB established its first Michigan office in July 1992, in Lansing, employing six professionals to support design services for the Michigan Department of Transportation, including the Berrien County US-31 Freeway Relocation project.

The firm has grown to employ more than 100 professionals in four office locations throughout Michigan who help play a role in planning and delivering high-profile transportation infrastructure projects across the state and around the country.

“What began as a small design office serving a handful of projects and clients has grown into a full-service practice shaping the communities we live in, from helping create new public transit options to overseeing development and deployment of our state’s most significant infrastructure projects,” said Eric Morris, PE, Michigan office leader and vice president. “Building trust and long-term relationships with our Michigan clients is how the firm consistently serves the region with technically innovative, meaningful work that has helped shape multimodal infrastructure.”

HNTB has served as prime design consultant for multiple freeway reconstruction projects in metro Detroit, including the award-winning I-75 Ambassador Bridge Gateway Project; provided construction oversight services for the North Terminal redevelopment project at Detroit Metropolitan Airport, developed a master plan for the Regional Transit Authority of Southeast Michigan; and served as owner’s representative for M-1 RAIL’s QLINE, the first operating streetcar system in Detroit since 1956.

HNTB’s Michigan practice is committed to promoting state-of-the-art transportation technology. Currently, autonomous and connected vehicle expert Jim Barbaresso, PE, HNTB national intelligent transportation systems practice leader, and senior vice president, is based in Detroit where he leads the firms emerging technologies practice.

“HNTB’s Michigan practice has invested in transportation technology since the Lansing office first opened,” said Matt Hintze, PE, HNTB Great Lakes Division president. “The firm continues to honor its commitment to technology in Michigan, providing national leadership in autonomous and connected vehicle technology, and recently helping provide technology solutions for safe truck parking on I-94.”

The firm helped MDOT plan, design and oversee installation of a Truck Parking Information and Management System along I-94 in southwest Michigan, the first of its kind which serves as model for other transportation agencies across the country.

Additionally, HNTB’s Michigan practice is committed to partnering with and mentoring disadvantaged business enterprises. HNTB’s Partners Program has provided business opportunities for DBEs, local schools and communities since 2009.

“HNTB believes established, experienced engineering firms have a business imperative to offer smaller companies knowledge and insight into industry processes,” Morris said. “Building strong business relationships with colleagues who have fewer resources strengthens the infrastructure community as a whole.”

Throughout HNTB’s history in Michigan, the firm’s projects and professionals have received industry recognition, winning several awards at the national and state levels, including the 2016 American Council of Engineering Companies of Michigan Engineering Eminent Conceptor Award for the 96Fix project, the 2015 ACEC/Michigan Large Firm of the Year Award, and a 2010 McGraw-Hill Construction “Best of the Best Award” in the Architecture – Sports/Convention Center category for the University of Michigan Football Stadium Renovation and Expansion.
