The Town of Davidson Rural Area Plan recently won two awards for design excellence. The first award is the Marvin Collins Planning Award in the Implementation/Small Community category from the North Carolina Chapter of the American Planning Association Awards (APA-NC).

The APA-NC Marvin Collins award recognizes a highly effective and/or successful plan, project, or ordinance implemented or adopted in the current or past five years. The judges noted that Davidson Rural Area Plan, “was an excellent example of conscious decision making for transitioning from urban to rural development. The plan contained a good review of the character of the area being considered and used this analysis to effectively establish rural growth centers.”  It was also noted that the committee members agreed that, “the plan exhibited an unusual degree of ‘thoughtfulness’ toward the issue being considered.”

The Davidson Rural Area Plan also received a 2017 Sustain Charlotte Award under the Land Use category. Sustain Charlotte is a nonprofit organization helping to advance a region-wide sustainability movement by serving as a catalyst for change. These awards recognize nonprofits, government agencies, and businesses for helping to advance Charlotte 2030: A Sustainable Vision or Our Region, which Sustain Charlotte launched in 2010. This comprehensive vision plan for local sustainability includes air, energy, food, buildings and homes, economy, parks, trees and green space, recycling and waste reduction, social equity, transportation, and water.

Craig Lewis, principal with Stantec’s Charlotte office said, “As a 20 year Davidson resident, I understand that our heritage is grounded in compact, walkable neighborhoods surrounded by rural lands. This plan combines those two elements into a coherent vision providing development equity to the landowners while protecting an unprecedented amount of open space in the process.”

Across North Carolina, Stantec employs a staff of more than 200 professionals providing landscape architecture, transportation, environmental, civil, water and structural engineering.
