The U.S. Department of Transportation issued a formal request for industry stakeholders to help federal officials “identify unnecessary obstacles to transportation infrastructure projects.”

In a June 8 Federal Register notice, the USDOT said it is reviewing its own “policy statements, guidance documents and regulations,” and will take public comments through July 24 on “non-statutory requirements that the department imposes and that should be removed or revised.”

The notice specified that it wants to target agency policies or actions “that unjustifiably delay or prevent completion of surface, maritime and aviation transportation infrastructure projects.”

USDOT Secretary Elaine Chao mentioned the Register notice during a June event at the department, where President Trump also spoke on steps the administration will take to reduce federal project permitting requirements.

In the notice, the USDOT said that its “primary focus is on administrative items that it has the authority to change, but if there are critical changes that are achievable only through legislative action, please submit proposed legislative changes. Commenters should make legislative suggestions only if all non-statutory options have been exhausted.”

The department also specified that it wants comments on project-hindering regulations, guidance and policies issued from the Office of the Secretary of Transportation and these operating administrations – the Federal Aviation Administration, Federal Highway Administration, Federal Railroad Administration, Federal Transit Administration, Maritime Administration and the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration.
