St. Paul engineering and design firm Stantec has received two awards for engineering excellence for its design work for Minnesota communities

The local engineering teams received a Grand Award and an Honor Award in the annual design competition, sponsored by the American Council of Engineering Companies of Minnesota (ACEC-MN).

Stantec’s design of the Central Park Fountain and Ice Skating Loop for the City of Maple Grove received both a Grand Award and the People’s Choice Award.  Stantec’s nationally recognized specialists served as the ice and aquatics consultant, providing engineering services for the skating loop, the refrigeration plant, and the containment curbs and railings. Stantec also designed the aquatic fountain, piping, and equipment room.

The 810-foot-long meandering ice skating loop, which accommodates up to 525 skaters, is the first of its kind in Minnesota and provides year round recreation. The 2,100-square-foot interactive fountain uses 67 multi-colored, LED-lighted ground spray jets and unlimited programming capabilities to provide an impressive light and water show.

An Honor Award recognized Stantec’s master planning and design of the 175-acre Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery – Preston for the Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs. The team provided the infrastructure that transformed the rugged site into a quiet setting for interments and contemplation. This included design for site, roads and utilities, as well as irrigation and landscaping consistent with energy and water conservation and environmental preservation. Phase 1 is complete and includes nearly 4,000 interment sites and support facilities. When fully developed, the site will provide 38,000 resting places.

The awards were announced at the ACEC-MN’s annual gala in St. Paul on January 27th.
