Elisabeth Malsch, Ph.D., P.E., an associate principal at Thornton Tomasetti, the international engineering firm, has been invited by the National Academy of Engineering (NAE) to attend the 2016 U.S. Frontiers of Engineering Symposium (FOE) on September 19-21 at the Arnold and Mabel Beckman Center in Irvine, Calif.
The U.S. FOE brings together 100 engineers ages 30-45 from U.S. companies, universities and government labs to discuss leading-edge research and technical work across a range of engineering fields. The goal of the symposium is to facilitate cross-disciplinary exchange and promote the transfer of new techniques and approaches across fields in order to sustain and build innovation among the next generation of engineering leaders.
• Dr. Malsch is the head of the Advanced Analytics group at Thornton Tomasetti, and has more than 12 years of experience in modeling the mechanical behavior of structures. She focuses on structural analysis and design with a specialization in investigative projects and restoration of historic structures.
• She recently spearheaded the firm’s development of the Fluid Harmonic Damper. Based on NASA technology, the Fluid Harmonic Damper is a lighter, less expensive and more flexible alternative to traditional tuned mass dampers for mitigating structural vibrations for tall buildings.
• Dr. Malsch holds a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, master’s degrees in civil engineering and engineering mechanics and a Ph.D. in engineering mechanics, all from Columbia University.
