Lynnwood-based electrical engineer Ian Cotton, PE, LEED AP, was recently selected as one of top young professionals in the Northwest by Engineering News-Record (ENR) magazine, the nation’s largest industry journal for contractors and design firms.

A key project manager at design firm Stantec, Cotton is one of just six professionals selected for the honor, which highlights the most accomplished construction industry professionals under the age of 40 in Alaska, Washington and Oregon.

Cotton, 38, has more than 11 years of experience, including nine years with Stantec. He has led the design on more than 55 projects since 2013. Project highlights include work for the Swedish Medical Centers: Cherry Hill, Issaquah and Ballard; LEED design for the T-Mobile “Creative Center” in Seattle; and the Columbia Tower Club renovations.

In addition to project work, criteria reviewed for the Top Professionals designation included candidates’ dedication to community service. Cotton serves as the vice president of Lynnwood’s city council with a focus on the Homelessness Task Force and the Neighborhoods and Demographic Diversity Commission. Additionally, he has helped build three orphanages in Africa.

“Ian is a leader at work, at home and in the community,” says Michael Newbury, Stantec principal in Lynnwood. “I have had the pleasure of working with Ian for nearly 10 years, and one of the things that set him apart from others is that he truly cares about people.”

The Top Young Professional honorees were selected by a panel of industry professionals. The panel’s selections were based on the nominees’ demonstrated excellence and commitment to their professions and communities.

Cotton is a Lynnwood resident and a University of Washington graduate.
