Overland Park, Kansas (22 August 2016) – Black & Veatch today announced that the company has been named to the Kansas City Techweek 100 list. The company was chosen in the Innovator category that recognizes entities that are shaping the industries they serve through the use of ground-breaking technologies. Black & Veatch was recognized for its work with smart cities, distributed renewables and electric vehicle charging stations.

“Helping to advance the use of sustainable smart technologies in Kansas City and around the world is a major focus for our company,” said Fred Ellermeier, Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Black & Veatch’s Smart Integrated Infrastructure (SII) business. “Kansas City has a strong history of innovation and building a workforce that creates and uses leading-edge technologies. Continuing to foster growth of the technology community in Kansas City is a major focus for our SII team.”

Black & Veatch is involved in a wide range of innovative technology projects. This includes pioneering work on microgrids that provide distributed electric generation through a combination of traditional and renewable energy sources. The company’s microgrid at its World Headquarters in Overland Park was selected for a prestigious Gold Edison Award this year. The microgrid system generates energy through a combination of natural gas, solar energy, geothermal and also employs a battery energy storage system. The microgrid is continually monitored and optimized through ASSET360™, the company’s cloud-based analytics platform.

The company is also deploying smart cities and smart utilities solutions that will deliver sustainability and increased efficiency through improved use of energy, water and communications. These efforts improve economic, environmental and social sustainability in communities around the globe. For example, Black & Veatch is working with Volta, which is expanding its deployment of electric vehicle charging stations in the United States. The initiative meets the increasing need for cost effective, commercially sustainable and scalable smart infrastructure for transportation.

Black & Veatch is in a joint venture designing and constructing an energy security microgrid at a Marine Corps air station in San Diego, California. The company also has a new sustainability offering focused on the enterprise-level market that will help large consumers of power, water and other critical resources achieve greater operational efficiency.

This is the second consecutive year that Black & Veatch has been named to the Kansas City Techweek 100 list. Last year Fred Ellermeier was named as among the leaders in influencing technology growth. Techweek 100 is an annual designation of the most renowned organizations and leaders selected by the Techweek community. Kansas City Techweek is Sept. 12-18.
