WASHINGTON, D.C., July 21, 2016 — STV, a leading construction management and architectural/engineering design firm, received a Project Achievement Award in the Infrastructure category (under $25 million) from the National Capitol Region Chapter of the Construction Management Association of America (CMAA) for its role in the District Department of Transportation (DDOT)-led replacement of the 27th Street Bridge over Broad Branch Stream in Washington, D.C.

The firm was contracted by DDOT to provide construction management and inspection services for the removal and replacement of an original superstructure that was constructed in 1950, along with a stone masonry substructure that predated it. The program was DDOT’s first accelerated bridge replacement project as well as the agency’s first geosynthetic reinforced soil-integrated bridge system project (GRS-IBS), an innovation used to reduce bridge construction time and cost.

“Under DDOT’s leadership, our project team developed a communications and document management system to help manage the cost and schedule of this accelerated bridge replacement project, while also supporting the client as it set a precedent for its future use of GRS-IBS,” said Jack D’Andrea, STV senior associate and the project/construction manager for the initiative. “We served as a primary point of contact for DDOT, working closely with the general contractor and prime subcontractors.”

The new bridge structure is a precast, prestressed concrete adjacent double-tee beam superstructure with an asphalt overlay, concrete sidewalk, and metal bridge railing. Modifications to the bridge approaches were also a part of the three-month replacement initiative.
