Arup has supported BAE Systems by providing consultancy on human factors, ergonomics, reliability, availability, maintenance and operations in the development of the first industry architecture for Digital Railway.

This new industry architecture provides a framework that will lead the way in the digital transformation of the rail network. A cross-disciplinary team was assembled by Arup to work alongside BAE Systems to ensure the framework was reliable and fit for purpose. The team adopted agile working methods, which saw teams produce deliverables via a series of ‘mini-sprints’.

Arup identified change management systems needed to ensure that all aspects of cultural and process system integration were incorporated into the future of Digital Railway. Ergonomic and human factors were brought to life by developing a series of user profiles detailing how stakeholders such as passengers, operators and maintainers would interact with the Digital Railway system.
“Digital Railway is set to revolutionise the way people and goods travel around the country and it is very exciting to be involved in this project at an early stage. The agile collaborative approach from all members of the team shows what can be achieved when new ways of working are tried.”
