TechShop, Inc., a membership-based, do-it-yourself workshop and fabrication studio with locations nationwide, today announced a partnership and co-location with Lowe’s in Round Rock, Texas. TechShop provides its members access to world-class shop space, tools, machines and training to enable them to turn their dreams into reality. The sixth TechShop store, opening adjacent to the existing Lowe’s Round Rock location, will allow customers to shop for inspiration and supplies at Lowe’s, then head next door to start, continue or finish DIY projects at TechShop.
Austin and its surrounding communities have long been a destination for makers and tech enthusiasts. TechShop has included the Austin area on its list of target cities since opening its first shop in Menlo Park, Calif., in 2006. The greater Austin area’s growing population of makers will have access to TechShop and Lowe’s in a one-stop location.
“The startup and maker culture is rich and growing in the Round Rock and Austin area,” said Jim Newton, TechShop chairman and founder. “With more than 4,000 tech startup companies employing more than 100,000 people in the region, these are people who make things, and they now have an open-access community place to gather, collaborate and make.”
“We literally knocked down a wall to welcome our neighbors at TechShop,” said Jay Rebello, vice president of Lowe’s new business development. “Many of Lowe’s customers are DIYers who are constantly looking for new ways to improve their homes. This partnership allows them convenient access to specialized tools and support to help them build nearly anything they can imagine. We’re proud to be part of the next generation of small business owners in the Austin area.”
Lowe’s provides virtually all the materials TechShop members may need for their projects and has a direct, in-store entrance to the space.
“Before we even opened our doors, close to 70 people had signed up for annual memberships,” Newton said. “That tells me Round Rock is the perfect community in which TechShop can thrive.”
“The new TechShop location in Round Rock will help us bring further innovation to the city, building on 100 years of creativity and strong community,” said Alan McGraw, mayor of Round Rock. “We are excited to see what is created as a result of this partnership and what will come of the energy it adds to the Round Rock economic landscape.”
TechShop is hosting an Open House weekend, October 20-21 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., at 120 Sundance Parkway Suite #350, Round Rock, Texas, adjacent to Lowe’s. Activities will include machine demos throughout the day and an offering of refreshments. All activities are free and all ages welcome.
