The Impact of New Urbanism on Portland City Planning

New Urbanism is an appropriately named movement within the history of American city development. It celebrates the good things that make cities vibrant, comfortable and healthy places to live, work and play. The movement has made people more aware of what they like about cities and how we can do a better job of planning to achieve much more livable communities. That it came from the urban design part of the profession, which includes architects and landscape architects, is a good message about how working with other related professional groups can greatly enhance the outcomes of city planning (Let’s keep that thought in mind as we continue this conversation over the next few months).
